BOAT SHOW’s Unbelievable opens with the hard-riffing ‘Entrée’ but it isn’t until the incendiary ‘Big Smoke’ that it truly catches fire. Alongside ‘Toxic’ this second cut sees these five Perth natives articulating frustrations of everyday life with a deft and clever irony. Whether consciously or not, Ali Flintoff and company hold a firm grasp on the idea that music can be a powerful medium, but only insofar as its entertaining enough to hold the listener's attention.
Sonically Unbelievable isn’t making a cosmic leap from ‘17s Groundbreaking Masterpiece. It’s more of a slight refinement. But that’s not to sell this record short. In tweaking their undercurrent of punky defiance with grungier licks and powerhouse rock BOAT SHOW’s second carries plenty of kick.
BOAT SHOW are an outspoken group with a wealth of personality. Yes, they have a killer live set, honest pathos and some topical lyrics but tying it together is an all-too-often-absent sense of fun. It feels like whatever the sonic mediums this group are setting their ideas to its never going to be dull.
