In the whirlwind of the past 18 months, Confidence Man have delivered standout sets at Splendour In The Grass, Falls and the legendary Glastonbury. Debut Confident Music for Confident People consolidates these successes. This group cuts it cool. As band and album title suggest they project confident personas. Self-absorption cast over irresistible rhythm.
Confident Music plays out as a weekend-long party. It hits off Friday and trails late into Sunday night. ‘Try Your Luck’ kicks off in spectacular fashion. It’s followed by ‘C.O.O.L Party’ a track which pulls the listener into the euphoric headspace of the party patron while ‘Out The Window’ talks consequences, dreaded sunrises and inevitable comedowns. ‘Catch My Breath’ is that second wind. It’s a refusal to back out.
But as all parties draw to their end so too must this album. It closes with the blossomy rhythm of ‘Fascination’. Usual thoughts and Sunday blues.
Confident Music packs sass. It’s naughty and there’s plenty of sly twist. But for all its turns it never loses funk nor creative edge. This debut is unique, relatable to the social present but layered with party-starting potential.
