There's a lot of excellent soul music out there these days. But there are few soul records in recent memory that are as good as Leon Bridges' debut album "Coming Home". That is a massive call, but "Coming Home" truly feels like an album that may define modern soul music.
The reasons why are simple. Bridges voice is gritty and sweet at the same time. It's every bit as good as those of the '60s greats like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, sacrilegious as that may sound. Simplicity is key here. These are just great songs, well executed and never overdone.
