Incest Fest was exactly how it should have been in my opinion, super awesome bands, and a small crowd full of fans that was really getting into the music. The turn-up wasn’t massive at all, just a small intimate gig where everyone had enough space to get their absolute groove on with their pals and sing along to their favourite tunes. It was one of those friendly gigs where everyone knew everyone in the usual shark bar family (I guess incest fest was a pretty appropriate name). If you didn’t catch the line-up, rad local bands such as Yes Sir Noceur, Maids, The Royales and WAAX took to the stage.
The night started off with the usual rush of everyone taking advantage of the all-famous shark bar $5 basics, before heading upstairs to witness the almighty Yes Sir Noceur bring a thunderous grand opening to the stage, with their ultimate rock tunes highlighted with a surfy psychedelic undertone that made it had not to dance along. The Royales emerged soon after with a very punky, Brisbane city influenced sound. They played their most renowned tunes ‘What I Need’ and ‘Never Look Back’ whilst chucking all their latest and greatest in there too.
Newcastle band, Maids, were the band I was probably most looking forward to see, with their brand new tune ‘Girl Power’ being released only a few weeks ago. The song, which is basically about poking fun at the sleazy nature of a lot of men in club environment, as well as two of their other favourites ‘Happy Here Right Now’ and ‘Mechanism’, have such an up-beat sound that makes you do one of those ‘jog on the spot really fast and throw your hands in the air’ kind of dances.
WAAX was the best way to finish off the night. After a long time of wanting to see these guys live, they were just as magnificent as I had imagined they would be. They contrasted the rest of the bands with their reckless and emotive music. Playing the tunes from their latest EP ‘Holy Sick’, their show encapsulated thrashy tunes that got everyone head-banging and crowd surfing, but then also managed to get everyone to raise their lighters and hug their best mate during ‘CC Thugs’. It was a pretty beautiful moment.
The whole crew at shark bar had a super rad night. A solid line-up, awesome crowd, and plenty of incest, what more could you want?
