Perth Live and Local @ Mojos with Hideous Sun Demon / Regular Boys / Shit Narnia / The Pissedcolas / Moana / Yaqui Yeti - 06/08/2016
If you’ve been to Mojo’s Bar once, you know you’ll be coming back time and time again. Saturday night was a beautiful portrait of the Perth/Fremantle scene, featuring six acts vastly different from one another, celebrating a farewell to event managers Bruno Sweetdog Records.
Yaqui Yeti opened the show at 7pm which is a bit early for most Saturday night party animals, they unfortunately did not get the crowd they deserved. They played very cool surf rock/Hendrix power trio lovelies, their namesake paying tribute to spiritual peyote smoking tribesman.
Moana was up next, opening the set with her crowd capturing vocal-only piece Hyena, prancing with the energy and power of an ancient goddess. Her current line-up is brilliant, the live violin work adding to the set’s spellbinding atmosphere. By her third song the room was packed, and Moana graciously thanked everyone for coming so early. The performance was otherworldly and amazing.
The Pissedcolas are a local favourite, playing a sweet sweet blend of droney stoner doom and stoner rock. I highly recommend this band for fans of legendary Japanese drone/stoner rock/noise outfit Boris. Fantastic fuzz riffs, great stoner drumming and cool Spanish lyrics, I’d say missing any of this band’s gigs is a huge mistake.
Shit Narnia always perform with explosive energy. This requires vocalist Hugh Manning to have to remove his jacket, shirt and jeans, performing only in black basketball shorts as he pours his heart into weaving stories over heavy yet beautiful music. Sam Atkin’s guitar work is attention grabbing and was a highlight of the entire night, Albert Pritchard's drumming is god damn insane at times, fast, intense and loud. Shit Narnia play the best god damn emo you will probably ever hear in your life.
Regular Boys were up next and it was spectacular. Their songs are incredibly Australian, super catchy and fun as all hell to dance to. Courtney Barnett fans will instantly forget all about her and just keep smashing Regular Boy’s two EP’s instead. The first song off their “Newcastle St Deli” EP, “Tired” is so catchy, you should go listen to it right now. You will most probably listen to the entire EP, all the way to the grungey, heavy ender “Cones”. The psychy, spacey, buzzy guitar lines are like breathing in fresh air, drinking pure spring water, getting a full body massage. Their new EP has a freakin’ horn section. This band just makes me super happy. I can’t wait to see them again and again and again.
Hideous Sun Demon opened their set with “Cul De Sac Vision”. The music video for this song was released in late May and it is so good you will have brain spasms. While it is my favourite song from them at the moment, they do have a great back catalogue to check out, the full length album “SWEAT” and the EP “MEAT”. The kooky videos for “Flex” and “Moan for Jesus” are also a must watch. Their new album is dropping in October which is exciiiiiiting. Hideous perform with the energy of Dead Kennedys and the crowd always laps it up in gulps. Vin’s gorgeous glittery guitar and tongue-in-cheek vocals were captivating, the crowd surfing was beautiful, the set was awesome. If you live in Fremantle or Perth there is no excuse to not go see Hideous Sun Demon perform, you will have the time of your life. Cool fact = they’re on the Southbound line-up with Koi Child and Tired Lion + many many many more.
So how was the gig? More beautiful than you can imagine. So follow these bands! Listen here:
