The Hunting Birds
Saturday night I headed down to Fremantle to catch The Hunting Birds. We climbed down the stone steps off into the basement of the Norfolk Hotel, which is The Odd Fellow, into a cosy venue with stonewalls, wooden floors and warm ambient lighting. Walking into this venue you feel like you have entered someone’s home, where the friendly bar staff are waiting to mix you a cocktail, pour you a beer, or a whisky from their huge wall of spirits.
The Hunting Birds take the stage for their first show of their ‘State of Mind’ Regional Tour. These guys have one of the tightest sounds I have seen live. This incredible folk/rock band is fronted by singer/songwriter duo Connor Minervini and Kendra Fewster. Kendra on keys and Connor on acoustic guitar they set the tone for the band with their incredible harmonies. The bass, electric and drums in this band all compliment each other flawlessly. The bass and drums team up to create an underlying path for the band to sit over and the electric creates these beautiful little Jeff Buckley type blues licks that puts the cherry on top of this flawless five piece.
Just before the end of the set these guys decided to bust out a cover of Eskimo Joe – From The Sea. If they hadn’t won the hearts of the first timers in the crowd already then this definitely did it. People started dancing from here on out and cheered for the band to continue playing all night. I am pretty excited to follow this bands journey and watch them grow. Definitely worth a look, if you find yourself down south this weekend they are playing in Margaret River and Bunbury. Otherwise head to their unearthed page and show some support! Don’t miss these guys! Yeww!
