The Hunting Birds won a chance to play at Falls Festival Perth this year, I was lucky enough to crash their final rehearsal and ask them a few questions about the festival, their upcoming single launch and their East Coast tour. Aswell as some fun stuff! Check them out at 12:10 Sunday on the Alley Stage!
So you guys seem pretty excited for falls on Sunday, what was the process in scoring that opportunity?
Connor - We got it through a publication called music insight that had a position on a foster the band competition, they picked us to be their foster band, and we won the public vote, now were here!
Listening to you guys rehearse and seeing you live I've noticed you have a really tight sound, how long have you guys been playing together?
Connor - I suppose its been a bout a year i think?
Kendra - Yep
Connor - In February, four of us, Brandon, Kendra and Chris were in the same class in music school and we met Caleb a little bit later through other people. We've had many different band members actually during our time, but this is the lineup now this is it!
How does the songwriting process work between the band?
Kendra - Well we will write the song together Connor and I, and then we take it to the band and they'll write their parts, everyone puts their little flare on things, and then from there the songs are worked on as a group. Whens its both of us, Connor does most of the chord progressions and ill do the melody and then we work on the harmonies and finally take it to band.
How do you all go with styles and things do you share a lot of the same influences?
Kendra - I think were all pretty different (laughs)
Connor - Theres lots of things I think we listen to that we all appreciate just as much as one another, we all respect each others tastes.
Have you written any new stuff lately, or are the soon to be releases some old favourites?
Kendra - Yes
Connor - Yeah we have, well the bands playing a few new tunes and its getting time to say goodbye to old tunes.
Kendra - We've already culled a few old ones.
Connor - Yeah, were in the transitional period.
Do you ever get sick of playing the same songs?
Connor - Na I don’t (laughs), I dont get sick of playing most of the songs, sometimes it can get tedious rehearsing them more than once in a week.
Chris - It always seems to be fresh when we play infront of people, its always different.
Are we going to hear any of these new tracks at falls?
Connor - Yeah there should be one or two, were only doing a quick set, so we have the three singles including the one thats coming out on Monday, and then a few old tunes.
Kendra - Yeah just try and squeeze as much in!
Next Friday is your single launch at Jack Rabbit Slims, thats pretty exciting!
Connor - Thats the one, we've got Wooly Mammoth and Hannah Smillie supporting us. They're cool cats.
Jack rabbits has its own little VIP area how excited are you to get amongst that?
Connor - Yeah dad's gonna get amongst it.
Chris - Yeah (laughs) our parents are going to make the most of that I think.
One week after your launch you have an East Coast tour planned, tell us a little about that.
Connor - Well were hitting, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney. Yeah taking it all the way.
Are you flying in-between or are The Hunting Birds going on a road trip?
Connor - Were flying and driving from brisbane to gold coast
Are you excited about it, I've never thought about flying with a whole bunch of gear and everything.
Connor - Yeah theres a lot of stress going on.
Kaleb - Yeah it could be a nightmare
Connor - Theres definitely times when we think about, how are we going to carry all of this stuff.
Chris - We can cross that bridge when we get there
Connor - When we’re at the airport about to fly out to Brisbane we will realise just how tough this is gonna be.
Would you rather fight 100 horse sized ducks, or 100 duck sized horses?
Kaleb - Holy shit
Chris - 100 duck sized horses
Kendra - Yeah
Connor - Yeah true
Chris - You just just boots them out the park
Kaleb - Imagine that though they would just be munching away at your feet.
Brandon - Thats a lot of horse power
Chris - ohhhhhhhhh
Kaleb - Got the dad jokes right there, horse sized ducks would be huge right?
Connor - Ducks are like, vicious animals. Horses don't eat meat.
Chris - Yeah either do ducks they live off bread.
Brandon - Yeah theres heaps of bread in the wild.
Kaleb - Yeah just a nice big cob loaf, just bring some hummus
Do you have any rituals or traditions before you get on stage?
Chris - 3 stage process
Connor - No I think usually its just tease Chris before we go on.
Brandon - If he’s there
Chris - Im a busy boy alright, I've gotta get my 3 stage process done.
Talk us through your three stage process
Chris - I cant say it its a secret process
Connor - Cant reveal it
Well thanks so much for for the chat guys hope you have an awesome time on Sunday!
Connor - We will thanks so much!
