Its been a busy year for Good Boy, it’s seems when they’re not busy touring, they’re releasing new music. In 2017 they’ve managed to play Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass as well as tour with Skeggs and Grinspoon. The Brisbane three-piece has released their latest EP ‘Shirk Life’ which seems to have steered into a new direction but still the same old Good Boy we love.
They’re one of the most Aussie sounding bands around as the distinct accent on vocals has been recognized throughout their career. From start to finish of the latest release it contains their individualistic sound, however they shook it up by throwing in an acoustic amongst their usual bouncy originals. Vocalist Rian King seemed to take a different approach lyrically sharing his frustration towards the current political state of Australia; it’s definitely a different side to the band we haven’t yet seen. ‘A Waste of Approximately 122 Million Dollars (Taxpayer Funded)’ is an obvious dig at the Government regarding the ridiculous amount of money spent on the marriage equality plebiscite. ‘Majic Country’ is the final track and personal favourite on the EP; it opens with a peculiar guitar riff then joined with an enjoyable upbeat feel by the rest of the band. It safe to assume that it’s also one of their favourites as the song concludes with “Lets do that again!” by the band.
‘Shirk Life’ is a real stand-out release for the Brisbane group, their progression assures the future of Good Boy is very exciting. This EP is a marvellous way to end the year on an absolute high and ensured they’re an act to watch in 2018.
