Jariah Travan had a chat to Elliott Hammond from The Delta Riggs about the newest album Active Galactic, OUT TOMORROW! and the upcoming tour...
So we’re here today to chat about the new album Active Galactic which is out Friday via Inertia Records... THE BIG DAY What are you feeling? Nervous, excited?
Uhm slightly pensive, we've got a launch party tonight in Sydney and had one last night in Melbourne. So people are starting to listen to the record and the feedbacks been pretty good but whenever you release something you always kind of like ... waiting to hear what the feedbacks going to be like, because it's old to us,the songs are 10 months or something, so we're well established with them but we know that our fans and listeners are hearing them for the first time. But we personally think it's the best thing we've ever done so we'll be pretty astounded if people don't like it...
Listening to this album there’s kind of an array of different themes running through it, what did you ideally want to achieve with this album?
Well basically we were listening to a lot of classic albums, the main one being 'Some Girls' by The Rolling Stones, and thats just exactly what you said then a bunch of different themes running through it, so we were trying to explore some kind of danceable punk rock vibe and we did that by mixing up some really upbeat danceable songs with some more gritty punk rock faster stuff. I guess kind of showcasing that the band can do both themes. So yeah the theme of the album is slightly galactic slightly disco, slightly punk rock.
Tell us about the name, Active Galactic?
What actually happened was when we were recording the album, we were using some old equipment, some old tape machines and old the desk we were using. Have you heard about this old machine in Switzerland?
No .. do tell?
Theres this huge old piece of equipment in Switzerland actually on the border of France and they conduct science experiments with it and they try to break atoms and kind of push things to the next level, so through no doing of our own we kind of realised there were parts of the music showing up on the recording that we couldn't actually account for so at the start we thought it was people sneaking in to the studio and recording these parts, then we realised that no one had actually been doing that. So because of these machines that we were using, it was teleporting this recording into a alternative galaxy, which is exactly a replica of us completely, and you were there, and i was there, and everyone you know was there in a parallel universe, so an alternative version of ourselves help us finish the record and they were probably more progressed than us because they did a really good job.
What a good story..
It's not a good story its just information haha
You recorded this album in just 9 days yeh? Was that rushed for you guys?
It wasn't that rushed, the recording we did for Dipz was done in 4 days so that was even more rushed, Having 9 days seemed like a luxury. We work really fat and work quite long hours and tend not to go to sleep much so 9 days was quite a long time.
What’s your favourite song on the album?
Probably the first track, 'Surgery of Love' it was a track that defined the writing process and got through that one. It was always something that had been worked up by the band for a while. We started working on that one in berlin actually in 2014, so it developed quite a bit. Definitely has some Prince, D' Angelo over tones over it. It's progress to the stage that it is now...
Who wrote that one?
Yeah it was a team effort and thats quite rare because Alex and I do most of the song writing but that song came together as a full band. Usually ill go away and kind of look the lyrics myself and re-adapt them and that one more than anyone was writing with the whole band.
You’ve just wrapped up touring for that ‘Surgery of Love’ how did you find the fan response? Tell us the craziest thing that happened on tour?
Yeah it was pretty out of control that last tour we did. So definitely a step up in hype of it all. I dno if it was the song or the excitement for the album,. If that last tour was an indicator enough then yeah the shows were pretty nuts!
So in saying that.. tell us the craziest thing that happened on the tour?
Ok well this is some weird thing that happened, Because my parents live on the Gold Coast so my mum came up to see the Brisbane show and it was after the show and the back stage area was quite packed and the usual things that happen after a show and my mum comes up to me and say's ' Elliott, this guy came up to me and know's I'm your mother and wanted to take me away to a room to do something and I just thought it was a bit strange' .... I was like MUM don't go, don't go into room with strangers, you don't want that. I haven't gotten to the bottom of it!
I'm not encouraging people to do it but on the last tour there were so many people crashing the green room that you would just meet the most interesting people and just let them stay!
So you guys are going on a MASSIVE tour for this album...where are you most excited to go to?
The regional spots are always fun because theres super high froth levels because they don't get the music out there as much. But obviously we love playing capital cities, Melbourne we consider our home town because that's where the band was really embraced. And playing Gold Coast, another kind of home town vibe because we've all spent so much time there and always have really good friends coming to the show and they're always high energy.
You have to fuck one, marry one, kill one.... Nickelback, Mrs Doubtfire, Batman?
Kill Nickleback, Fuck Batman, and Marry Mrs Doubtfire for sure. I mean with the batman thing its not like you can see his face, its just latex and leather. And with Mrs Doubtfire she's just a homey kind of person, so it's a good way to carry out the remainder of your life.
Would you rather have a large 10 inch long belly button that swayed to music or have accordions for legs?
Definitely accordions for legs it would be awesome, you could make your own sea music, you could display your mood. And if you were in a hurry and had to run somewhere, everyone would be really panicked because the noise of the accordions would make them really anxious and you would distract them from their work and they would cross at you.
Would you rather use eye drops made of vinegar or toilet paper made from sandpaper?
Definitely eye drops, that's guna be a one time thing where as you would have a slew of problems if you started using toilet paper made of sandpaper. I dno if you've noticed but i have really small eyes.
Would you rather secretly have sex with a goat or have everyone think you had sex with a goat even though you didn’t?
I would rather everyone think i had sex with a goat, i don't have a huge quam with a goat but i kind of think those of rumours are good, i was talking to Monte the other day about how i wanted to come out of the closet and he was like your not gay but i just thought it would be funny.
Would you rather lick an old sticky mans arm pit or cover yourself in honey and roll in the sand?
Thats a no brainer, of course i would cover myself in honey and roll in the sand, thats a fun thing to do.. can you run into the ocean afterwards?
Can you run into a milkshake?
But then it would be like a sandy, crunchy milkshake, it would be gritty when you ate it
So yeah it would be a vanilla, honey, sandy milkshake with a nautical twist...
Alright ill accept it...
