Introducing Keelan Mak, a 20-year-old producer, singer and songwriter from Brisbane, who's music is invocative of a sultry, smoky mix of both himself and late nights in the inner city. This remarkable 20 year old today released new single 'Weigh You Down'.
Combining the blissful, intoxicating songwriting style of James Blake and the epic atmospheric production of Tora, Keelan layers his production with warm, soulful vocals that call to you like the haze of a midnight dancefloor.
'Weigh You Down' is the first release from Keelan that showcases his incredible ability to produce and write powerful soul and RnB pop music with an energized, youthful electronic edge. Written and performed by Keelan himself and mixed by Tristan Hoogland, this new instalment from the sultry Brisbane local draws the listener in and captivates them long after the song is finished.
A self-described hermit, Keelen's teen years were built on a balanced diet of pop, RnB and indie music. He gave Uni a try but dropped out after one year to give "the real world" a try. At age 16, he picked up the mouse and keyboard and started to produce his own music- taking sound samples from around his house and playing them until they became something new. For example, in this new single. the snare sound in the second verse is actually the sound of a voice memo recording a cigarette packet hitting a glass outdoor table.
'Weigh You Down' is written about the moments in a relationship when you find yourself doing something because your significant other wants to- sometimes its picking where to eat, sometimes its what movie to watch, sometimes it's ending the relationship "if you want to".
"I'd give it all away, (but only) if you'd want me/ if you'd want me to"
"If you'd want me to" becomes a playful phrase, with the idea of being scared and weak and not wanting to make the moves yourself, so you depend on the other person to call the shots.
