Sydney lady Gordi (Sophie Payten) has been very busy indeed with getting an E.P together, playing epic shows at Bigsound, heading on tour with Little May and studying Medicine but not really... We got to have a chat with Gordi at this years Bigsound
You played the Mushroom Pre Party on Tuesday night and last night your show case at Oh Hello, how did they go?
The Mushroom showcase was really fun, lots of booze floating around but last night was a great show and made me feel like it was really worth coming up here and doing this, I had a great response and crowd, everyone seemed really into it.
On your Facebook page you made a little playlist of tracks from Bigsound artists that we all should check out, have you had an opportunity to catch any of those guys yet?
Yeah I saw Holy Holy last night, who were so polished and are really taking that next step, which I think is really great for artists like myself to see because it's easy to look at artists who are 4 or 5 years ahead of you, and take some type of direction from them. There's even more bands I want to see today, I'm really excited for Gang Of Youths, and caught Slum Sociable who also played at the Mushroom party on Tuesday night. I'm actually co writing with those guys in the next couple of weeks as they are also a part of mushroom publishing, so we got teamed up and hopefully a good song will come of it.
You just signed with Mushroom not too long ago, are you stoked with that?
Yeah just a couple of months ago, it's such a great company and label, best indie label in Australia so I was totally stoked to be a part of it.
You're heading off on a tour with Little May, excited?
Yeah! I remember when I came across their song Hide and I became so obsessed with them and went to Splendour and saw them, I actually met a couple of them the other day and they are such nice girls, it'll be cool to see first hand how they do things. The tour is through Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and I think I may be jumping on a London show, which will be my first show overseas, I was actually there on holidays to start with so yeah jumping onto the stage will be exciting.
When is the official release for the E.P?
That's the golden question, we keep pushing it back, we are just sort of seeing how radio is responding, we don't want to flood it too soon with extra songs we just want the new single 'Can We Work It Out' to breathe and come into itself at the radio stations. We are in the throws of either releasing it independently or through a label, and we've chatting to a few different ones but we're still independent at this stage so we've got a few big decisions to make. There's one more song to come on the E.P and a few more special things, the last track is pretty different, it's not as acoustic and keys are more incorporated.
I read that you study medicine, completely different world to music hey?
Yeah meant to be at uni now... I guess people have lots of things happening in their lives, I'm in my 4th year of 6 but I'll see how it goes but music is definitely my passion right now,
What is your dream Merch item ?
Temporary tattoo, I would love to see people with Gordi on their cheeks
What artist do you associate with your childhood ?
Billy Joel, my mum is a Billy Joel nut and had his records on at home all the time. you would get into the car and put the cassette tape in, and all sing along, he really taught me how important lyrics and story telling are.
What would be your dream collaboration ?
Asgeir or The Tallest Man On Earth, when we went to make these first few singles, we sort of were thinking of creating a female version of Asgeir and Tallest Man type of collaboration, a modern folk sound.
