Answering the phone at 5 in the afternoon on a hot sweltering day, all the way from L.A, Leroy from The Gooch Palms share’s his favourite night of the Violent Soho tour, how personal the new album ‘Introverted Extroverts’ is to him and Kat and whether or not he would lick a hairy old man’s armpit!
So why the move to America?
Basically so we could be full time musicians, we’ve got a show tonight, a Monday and you can do that over here.
What’s the best part about being in the music scene over there?
Everyone comes here from everywhere else with the same sort of drive and stuff, so it’s cool seeing other people do what we do. We’re from Newcastle and there wasn’t much going on when we first kicked off there at all, so it was like we had no one to really pin ourselves to and push us, but over here it’s like so competitive. We only just put out a record last week and we’ve already written 15 new songs to have up our sleeves. The first time Kat and I haven’t had full time jobs we’ve already been working on stuff.
Introverted Extroverts – tell us a bit about this bad boy?
We kind of do it the same every time. For this one we sort of just worked on songs really slowly and it slowly turned into an album. Like we didn’t really go ‘Hey we’re writing album number 2’ we sort of went ‘hey we’ve wrote a new song, let’s play it live’. We didn’t really put any pressure on it, like we’re going into the studio, we’re going to sit down and start writing. We didn’t really do that. But we’re doing that this time which will probably be the third album. We’re actually sitting down and writing an album, we’ve never sat down and done that before. Lyrically but musically that’s where you kind of think about the theme of the record. The last one was all about Newcastle and growing up in a small town. This one’s a really personal record which is always a really scary thing to do, but now that it’s out it’s a really good feeling!
And you’ve found the feedback really positive?
Yeah it’s been kind of crazy, everyday we’ve been waking up and there’s another 4 star review. We got a 4 star review from Rolling Stone and as a little kid I use to have a subscription for Christmas. So to see it in there it was such an awesome review, next to one of my favourite singers KD Lang so it was a real surreal moment. Its kind of crazy!
You just wrapped up tour with Violent Soho, what’s it like touring with those boys?
If i told you i’d have to kill you... haha! I don’t want to disappoint their fans but they are 4 of the nicest humans in the world and they looked after all of us so well, at no point did we feel uncomfortable. Kat was the only girl on tour and you know they were just the best dudes in the world. They recognise being us, and remember what it’s like to being a smaller band going on tour with a bigger band. I aspire to be them so hopefully one day we can do what they did for us for a smaller band.
What do you think was the best night of the tour?
The last night of the tour, it was insane! During the last song all support bands jumped on stage and stole toilet paper from all the toilets and covered The Enmore Theatre in toilet paper,. Every member of the band crowed surfed. It was a really surreal moment,. Everyone had a smile on their face. So much Comradery, everyone was like ‘This is fukn sick!’ Violent soho had never done a headline show that big so every single person was just stoked. We only decided to do before 50 seconds before we all ran out. The stage manager was cool and he was just like ‘hell yeah lets do it!’
Yeah well I wouldn’t wanna be the person to say no haha
Yeah it was insane, the crowd looked like they were going to explode when we all ran out! I think people really like seeing that, a real brother and sisterhood of bands that really love each other and support each other.
You guys get to come back and start your own tour now are you excited to bring to aussie fans and bring it to a live stage?
YEAH! We’ve been playing the songs of this album on an American tour earlier this year so that was good because we got a few of the songs in the mindset. So we’re not nervous to play the new material now. Pretty much all of them because we did about 100 shows last year so we put 3-4 of them in a set, we kind of could because all the songs were pretty new. Main thing I really enjoy is the crowd singing the songs back and actually knowing the song when you hit that guitar riff or that drum beat. You can feel the energy!
What can we expect from a Gooch Palms shows, I haven’t had the chance to see you guys yet but I have heard some pretty whacky things?
It just depends, even tonight, I don’t know what’s going to happen tonight, which I think people have come to like about our shows. We’ve never planned out a show EVER. Anything can happen. It could be an audience member does something that sets me and Kat off. We were playing a show in Brisbane one time and all these girls took their tops off so I was like “oh well I don’t need to get naked, they did it for me”. And the same thing happened when we had a stage invader and he got completely naked... so you don’t really know what’s going to happen. I feel like the audience is becoming more a part of our shows as well. We’ve got some fanatical fans that come to our shows now and just want to be a part of it which is sick for us and means I can do less. Next thing you know we’ll be sitting on the ground cross legged and letting the audience go wild!
Now to wrap things up with a Fast 5..
Would you rather lick an old sticky mans arm pit or cover yourself in honey and roll in the sand?
Definitely the honey one!
You're on a desert island with a beautiful woman... Kat...she begins to change...Would you rather she is top half fish or bottom half fish?
Top Half Fish haha!
Would you rather...Fart popcorn? Or have your past and future web browsing history available to everyone?
If anyone knows me I don’t really hide anything so definitely the second one.
Would you rather be able to turn invisible, read minds or be able to fly?
Turn invisible because I wrote a song about that on the new album haha!
Would you rather...be sexually attracted to fruit or have cheetos dust permanently stuck on your fingers?
Sexually attracted to fruit... there’s something about Mango’s.
