So what else have you guys been up to in the terms of writing and everything?
Yeah we haven't stopped really, we finished Europe, went to the studio and we recorded a couple tracks, hopped on a plane and we've been writing the new album ever since we got back, and playing inbetween so thats kind of been happening as well.
Hey its Keeley from Rabbit Radio
Hey how you doin?
I'm good how are you?
How often are you guys hanging out in LA?
We have a room over there, but were pretty much on tour the whole time. We pay like $500 a month for this room that we kind of just leave all our crap at and then go on tour, but its kind of nice to come home to something after a 3 and a half month american tour, without having to hop on a plane, you can just go back and chill out for a bit and then normally it goes from an american tour back here to Australia so we always try and have maybe like 1 or two weeks off before we come back, its kinda nice.
Do you guys play lots of gigs over there, do you have a good following?
Yeah i think we did…over the last…like since March 2016 we've done like over 300 shows probably.
Whats your favourite venue over there to play?
In america? Oo..umm i could probably give you my top 3. The Echo in Los Angeles, and then, probably The Empty Bottle Chicago, and yeah probably The Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco.
Awesome, and what makes them your favourite?
I dunno there like that perfect 300pax room, that just sounds sick and you get super well looked after, and you know if you start to play there your starting to do well over there too so its got that aspect, you could book a headline show there and people know who you are, and it feels really good to play there.
Thats awesome and a pretty good crowd comes along?
Yeah for sure.
How to shows here in Australia compare to shows over there?
I mean they're kind of..its not like theres a huge..i feel like, we just toured the UK and Europe as well and i don't feel like theres much difference like, everyone just goes psycho..
Limbs flying everywhere, but its good in a way i mean everyones, i dunno i think that, i don't know if its the sort of music we play or whatever but, the crowds can be a little more inconsistant like in america you do go and play some pretty small towns, but its still really cool as well like we would rock up to a small college town, i feel like something like that is such a new experience over there like a college town show. You can only really play there when kids are at school, otherwise no ones really lives there and you kind of drive into town and you feel like your in a real life movie like with all the fraternity houses, and yeah its kind of wild. So them shows yeah when you play college town shows, its different to when your in New York or LA or Chicago or Austin, you can be in Perth or Brisbane or you know, places like that.
Have you guys ever rocked up to any of the frat parties?
It would be interesting to hear what they are actually like.
Na I've always fantasised about being that cliche band that plays in the backyard in like one of those early 2000 teen movies
Haha that would be great.
You guys are heading to Rottnest Island for Australia Day? Have you been over there before?
No never. Yeah when we played with Violent Soho last year we were here for 6 hours in total but we flew from Adelaide, played the gig and at 8:30/9 o’clock we hopped in the car and went straight back to the airport and flew out. We thought we hadn't been to West Australia for ages but then we realised we were here a year ago but only for enough time to have a meal, down at Northbridge, looked in a couple of shops and then played later. So this time its actually nice, we got in yesterday and play tonight have tomorrow off. We were thinking about playing on Australia Day but we kinda decided to leave it out.
Yeah for sure just enjoy yourselves.
Australia Day is pretty big over at Rottnest too so you'll definitely have a good time!
Cool. We hired snorkels and bikes haha. That will be cool.
You camping over there?
Na were coming back, just going for the day.
What do you reckon of craft beer? Under or over rated?
Overrated, extremely. Beer was never meant to be that complicated.
Yeah na its like having a full meal isn't it.
Yeah its gross. But you know, some people love it.
So what else have you guys been up to in the terms of writing and everything?
Yeah we haven't stopped really, we finished Europe, went to the studio and we recorded a couple tracks, hopped on a plane and we've been writing the new album ever since we got back, and playing inbetween so thats kind of been happening aswell.
When do you plan to release the album?
I have no idea. Kind of just whenever its done, kind of like, 6 songs deep now which is good yeah.
You guys have recorded with producers that have worked with The Black Keys and stuff, are you using those guys again or are you going down a different road?
Umm, we potentially could do, yeah were doing with someone but i don't want to give it away yet, i don't want to jinx myself.
How long are you in WA for? Where do you shoot to after here?
Yeah we leave on the 29th after the Mojos show, and off to Byron and The Gold Coast
And you'll be back in March with the Dune Rats hey?
Yep thats will be wild times.
Yeah that will be a really cool tour I reckon.
Yeah, yeah we knew we were doing that in October, we've known about it for a super long time, but yeah its good because we've done South By South West two years in a row every March, and this year we were like maybe we have a year off because its so hectic, you know you doing like 10-15 shows sometimes, 3-4 shows a day, and thats been on march, every year now for the past 2 years, so we were kind of like, already not doing anything in March. The boys came over sometime last year and they were like yeah do you guys wanna do a tour and we were like hell yes! We’ll be there.
Thats going to be so much fun!
Can we expect to hear any of the new stuff on the weekend?
No..its kind of like, were using a lot of different equipment with a lot of the songs as well so, were going to have to figure out all that sort of logistics to that now, we didn't even come here on our last album tour we had to go back to america. we were here really quick for our album launch last time, we didn't venture over which is a bit of a bummer but yeah it will be pretty much the two albums that we have that we will pretty much be playing at the moment.
Cool thats still heaps!
When do you fly back to LA have you got more shows planned over there this year?
No we dont, were kind of here, now that we've decided to record a new album maybe in April that kind of put us here that and the Dune Rats tour, but we might be going back to Europe and the UK before we go back to America.
What's your most memorable gig over there?
Most memorable gig, ummm… probably we played the Burger Boogaloo Festival in 2015 and we like played in front of, we played third on the day but first on the main stage, so we were like ughhh its always such a brutal thing to do when your on a bigger stage and a big area, but we played to 2 and a half thousand people and it was pretty psycho… Yeah..
I'm so excited to see you guys because i can just imagine that you have this incredible stage presence that gets everyone really riled up.
Do people go absolutely nuts?
Yeah they do, I'm all for it as long as nouns getting hurt! Lately theres sort of been two shows where we had to stop and let everyone have a bit if a breather, but it was a weird place in our hometown in Newcastle and there was about 600 people there and i think we were 1 and a half songs into the set and these two dudes just started punching the living crap out of each other for whatever reason so we had to stop it, and we didn't want them to get kicked out either over some tiff so we were like you have to go to that side of the crowd and you have to go to that side of the crowd
and then we went back into the song.
Is the energy way more insane at your home town gigs?
It never used to be until a couple of years ago, we wrote a whole album called novos which is short for novocastrian which is someone from Newcastle and it was about how, you know we would go down to Sydney and play to a crowd we would go to Melbourne and play to a crowd but we would get 10 people to a show in Newcastle, there was no scene whatsoever, you would kind of skip newcastle on a tour you know, and my mate opened up a record store and started putting on shows there like all ages shows, and thats when everything started to change because you know 15 year old kids are not 18, they remember what that was like, and now we've got heaps of cool bands coming out of Newy and theres a really good scene starting to build there, and i kind of feel like a proud father.
Thats so cool so now theres a definite following when you go back.
Yeah compared to like 5 years ago when everyone was like i fuckin hate living here lets move away sort of thing but now were like were The Gooch Palms from the greatest city in the world Newcastle Australia, everyone started wearing Newcastle Apparell and starting clothing companies theres this company called Fuckn' Newcastle that just make all t shirts and things like that so theres like, its awesome now!
Haha that sounds amazing!!
Yeah it is.
I better let you go man and enjoy your time in Perth.
Have an awesome Aussie Day in Rottnest.
Yeah we will, I cant wait!
Awesome cool man!
