The Love Junkies were founded by Mitch McDonald and drummer Lewis Walsh at the end of 2009. Since then 2011 saw the band catapulted into the music scene receiving rave reviews on their independently released EP. Now after just returning to Australian shores after touring America the band are gearing up to hit the stage at Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane Thursday the 26th. Mitch McDonald took the time to chat!
So you guys have been together quite a while, how did you all come together?
We got together at the end of 2009 I think, we were all mates from high school and we had been playing music together loosely for a couple years. Then we got together at the end of 2009 and thought let’s make this an actual band and give it a shot!
So really where here to chat about the new single... I Had A Party Once only released about two weeks ago...and the tour... you’re already off to a bloody huge year...
What’s this one about, obviously a party haha but how did it come about? The lyrics are pretty interesting
It’s a tricky one, it’s a bit rough, it’s kind of about being in a super destructive relationship and finding enjoyment in ruining each other’s lives. So you keep messing with one another and you enjoy it.. it’s all a party!
What would you say is the ultimate party?
No idea, we’re all really quite introverted, especially now, the older we get, we get worse at being outside. Probably like a maximum of 10 people maybe 20 haha!
You worked with Dave Parkin on this bad boy, what was it like working with him?
Yeah it was good, We’ve known Parko for years ever since we started. He recorded one of our first ever singles back in 2011 maybe, he’s a legend! Easy to work with and super chilled. He has this ability to pull the best out of people and get the best takes.
So you just toured America to celebrate your third studio album....and the release of Nobody what was it like touring America? Any cool tour stories?
It was a really big tour, it was fun, it was a goodtime but it was huge! And we pretty much just drove the entire time, it wasn’t that glamorous. We slept in the van most of the time. It was really nice to come home and sleep in my own bed.
How do fans differ from there too here?
Well it was pretty much like playing your first ever show in Perth again every night for 5 weeks, there wasn’t that many people at the shows, occasionally there would be. But they were kind of just like in that whole.. Stand there and watch..Who is this? Where are they from? Why are they doing this? Do they like this? I’m not sure...Do other people like this? That guys tapping his foot...maybe i should tap my foot too! Haha that kind of thing!
So you’re on your nobody tour, celebrating your third LP in the works, going throughout Aus, how’s it all going? Where have you been so far?
Well we haven’t released the third yet, we haven’t recorded it yet, and it’s in the works. We’re slowly organising to do it. All the songs are there they just need to go to a place and record them, preferable that won’t cost much money because we don’t have any. So we’ll probably go to my parents house and borrow some equipment off some friends, seems like that’s the only way people are going to hear any more love junkie songs.
So people have been responding to the new songs pretty well?
Yeah they have, I think the last two tracks we’ve released people are really diggin, I’m pretty keen to release some more new songs, I feel like it’s been forever since we’ve done that even though it was only a couple weeks ago.
How is it touring with the new line up, Harley Barnaby from FOAM now on bass and Rumble moved to guitar? Why the change?
I guess the last couple albums, especially with the second album it was becoming more and more obvious that we needed someone on extra instrumentation. And just the way that the new songs were going, trying to break them down and do them as a three piece I kind of felt it could work, having a studio song and convert it to a live version, sometimes it works really well but it got to a point we’re i felt like we were losing all the time, like we’d sit there and play the song but it would be missing a bunch of parts I had been playing in my head. So we were like who are we guna get, it has to be someone who fits in and luckily Harley is that guy!
Where are you looking forward to playing most?
Either Brisbane or Melbourne
This Thursday you’re playing at Black Bear lodge, have you played there before?
Yeah we’ve played there once3 before a long-time ago, so we’re looking forward to playing to more people this time haha!
So what’s in store for the rest of the year?
I guess just want to work on this 3rd album and pull something together we’re all really happy with, release it, tour and keep doing that! Keep trying to push overseas! I kind of wish we were touring Europe, as much as I love America, Europe is sick! It would be nice to have enough money to do both. When we’re big rock stars!
