We are more than excited for the upcoming Shakafest lineup, particularly the inclusion of one of our favourite local bands, Cakes freed up some time in their busy schedule to chat to us about their new EP, Smash Mouth and what to expect next. Check it all out below!
Rabbit Radio: Shakafest will be your first festival appearance, you must be stoked to be part of this huge line-up?

Cakes: Absolutely! We’re really happy to be playing this fantastic festival in the greatest suburb in Aus. Pumped! Frenzal!

RR: You just dropped your music video for ‘Public Fish’, what was the influence for thevideo?

C: Jakeo came up with concept for this video, as well as the existing videos we’ve made. The inspiration was morns and lawns. We both love a well-kept lawn. Plain and simple. Snip, mow, the occasional top dress, watch for thatch and don’t forget that weed and feed. We had to introduce a nonsensical element, so hooded space freaks took the lead.

RR: So, your EP is called ‘Prescription Bugs’ and latest single is ‘Public Fish’, do you deliberately include animals in your song titles?

C: The inclusion of animals in our song titles and releases has been purely coincidental. We are both fans of animals small and large and I think this love has crept into our writing and subsequent song titles. The names of some animals emit a certain mood or vibe to us.

RR: Also, when can we expect some more new music from CAKES? And will they have animal song titles?

C: In the new year. We have some gems in the works. Haha, actually yes they will likely include animal song titles. Again, purely coincidental…

RR: If you could join one another band on stage that’s also on the Shakafest line-up, who would it be?

C: Bliss N Eso in 5 or 7. Realistically though, probably Flying Machine. Brilliant band.

RR: If you had to pick between the two, which would you prefer. Listen to someone scratch a chalkboard through headphones or watch Smash Mouth’s ‘All Star’ music video on repeat?

CC: 100% Smash Mouth and their Grammy nominated smash hit “All Star”. Fun fact, if you search up All Star in your internet web browser you will be presented with the most chins you have ever seen. Nails and Chalkboards are a disgusting psychoacoustic trash duo.

RR: Who did ‘Sound of Silence’ the best, Simon and Garfunkel or Disturbed?

OH-WAH-AH-AH-AH! The Simon and Garfunkel version is a bloody classic mate. No comparison.

RR: Lastly, what would it take for you to close your set at Shakafest with Whitney Houston’s version of ‘I Will Always Love You’?

C: Jake and I have always entertained the idea of covering a doable Meshuggah song. We will cover Whitney Houston when those Vikings do.
