Kyle and Marcus from Woollongong’s White Blanks took some time out to have a chat with Rabbit Radio’s Tayla Sudall about the goon sponsorship they managed to secure for their upcoming tour with Walken, potential Pick of Destiny covers, getting the runs on tour and their thoughts on Kyle’s fashion choices.
RR: Hey guys, what’s up?
KS: Not a lot actually, we’re drinking a bunch of free goon we got for this tour we’re on
RR: -laughs- I was actually gonna ask you something about that, so yeah, you did get a goon sponsorship, so like, do you guys just have like a tonne of goon box helmets now? –laughs-
KS: They sent us like 14 or 15 casks of wine
RR: That’s amazing
KS: It’s pretty hectic hey
RR: -laughs- And so, how did you guys get that?
KS: Walken, the band that we’re touring with, I think they just hit ‘em up and bit of like a… ball park hit up… but they said yes and gave us a bunch of goon it’s sick!
RR: -laughs- that’s great! And so also your debut EP All I Wanted Was To Say Hello dropped earlier this year, ah so what can you tell us about the writing and recording process of that album?
KS: Umm, well I’ll let Marcus answer that one because that’s his kinda expertise
MA: Pretty much um, I demoed it for about 2 years and it sat in my room for about 2 years on my laptop just recorded, and then I broke my laptop so I lost all those demo recordings
RR: Oh no!
MA: But then I re-demoed it all, and then after that we decided it was a good time to try and record something, because we’d released that one single ages ago and then we’re like ‘aww we haven’t really done anything for ages’ so we went and hit up my mate Chris and he plays in a band called TOTTY, he’s their drummer, and he was like aw yeah, sorted all that out, we did all the drums at this local bar that we all, like, I work there and we all just play there heaps it’s called Radbar and then we did all the guitars at Chris’ place and put all that together, yeah, put it all together within like 2 weeks and yeah just a couple hours here and there
RR: That’s sick, was it hard to stay motivated after your laptop broke and you lost everything?
MA: Aww, yeah, nah, like…
KS: Fresh start
MA: Yeah, it put a lot of perspective on it like we had to re-record stuff that we’d already created and try and make it better I guess
MA: Put some motivation to the creation
KS: Aw that’s a good one!
RR: You guys are poets! –laughs- and to celebrate the release of that E.P. you guys went on a tour of the east-coast of New South Wales with the four-piece band Jacob, how was that tour? How’d it all go?
KS: That was so sick!
MA: Lots of bonding! Lots of um, aw, I got the runs at one point it was real funny
MA: Lots of boozin’, lots of chillin’ with the fellas!
KS: It was sick! We’ve been mates for ages and we’ve always talked about doing a run of shows together and Jonno finally put them together, our manager
MA: We got pissed at the pub one time and we’re like alright you guys put a date to it, like choose a month and we’ll do it then, and we said January and then we’re like yes, sick! We did it and we put ‘em together and we got it sorted!
RR: That’s awesome! And so some bands try to go for different sounds after they release music, do you guys think you’ll be sticking with the rock vibe or do you see yourselves ever veering off into different directions?
MA: We’re going shoegaze
KS: No we’re not, we’re going…
MA: We’re going shoegaze! –laughs-
KS: We just recorded the second E.P. and there’s definitely a lot more noise in there, it’s a bit more like, there’s a bit more production behind it
MA: We’re going shoegaze!
KS: No we’re not!
MA: Yes, we’re going shoegaze!
RR: -laughs- you’re going where?
MA: If you’ve ever heard of like, bands like My Bloody Valentine, Blurr and stuff, we’re just going… we’re trying to develop into like a surf, shoegaze, noise-punk band
RR: Oh okay, cool! And so you guys won the Triple J Unearthed competition back in 2016, what did that do for you guys as a band?
MA: A lot at the time, we were able to push our music a lot better. Helped us sort of persuade the fan base into liking us a bit more
KS: It put us on the map a bit too
RR: Bit of recognition
RR: So how are you guys feeling about your upcoming tour with Walken?
MA: Just chillin’ with it like, it’ll be fun to just hang out with mates, they came down last week and we’ve just been hangin’ with them for the last week
RR: Oh that’s good!
MA: We played Sydney at The Record Crate with ‘em, which was pretty great. We played with this band called Blue Velvet, like, I’ve been hangin’ to play with that band for ages so it was great to be able to play with other mates as well
RR: Yeah! And not too long ago you guys played that gig with Horror My Friend who are one of your favourite bands, so how did it feel to play alongside bands that you’ve admired?
KS: It’s sick, it’s cool, like you’re good mates at the time but then like, bands that you actually froth so it’s kinda weird when you play with them and you kinda like froth out a little bit, it’s sick!
RR: Do you ever get star struck or anything?
MA: Aww, yeah, nah, it’s become a tradition now when they play PB Remains I get up and do the big scream at the end with ‘em, so, hopefully one day we get to tour with ‘em so we can just do a big collab scream at the end of every show
RR: Yeah that’d be sick, and so I also read on the Facebook page that you guys reckon Kyle needs some fashion advice so I was just wondering why you guys are bullying Kyle? –laughs-
KS: Yeah I cop it!
MA: Personal opinion, um, I haven’t seen him take his hat off in about 6 months, and I dunno, something to do with his um, he needs to find a better way to cover his feet
RR: -laughs- What? Does he get around in Birkenstocks?
MA: It’d be good if he was able to wear some slip-on sandals
RR: Yeah aw well maybe he does need the Birkenstocks then?
KS: Yeah, I would actually love to rock some Birkenstocks next summer
RR: They’re very comfortable! –laughs-
KS: Our manager wears ‘em in winter, he just wears birks with like the high socks and jeans, it’s a pretty gnarly statement
RR: That’s a, yeah, that’s a hot look –laughs- So after you wrap up the tour with Walken you’ll be heading off on a national tour with Verge Collection where would you guys say you’re most excited to be headed too?
KS & MA: Perth! –laughs-
KS: That wasn’t planned! Nah, never been there and they’ve got those Emu Exports and I’m fucking syked to have one of those
MA: They’re like either really good and they give you a really good hangover, I’ve only had a hangover twice in my life and I wanna have another hangover
RR: Well we’ll have to talk to you afterwards to find out if you got a hangover or not –laughs-
RR: So ah, what does the rest of 2018 have in store for you guys?
KS: Flarin! We’re gonna be flarin! Nah, we’re gonna do a single tour in May hopefully if things are lookin’ good, and then I dunno, we’ve got an E.P coming out this year
MA: Brainwash some kids, start a cult, start a revolution
KS: Drink more beers I guess
MA: Take over the White House and start a rock parliament that everyone has to be a part of
RR: You’ve got some massive plans for the, what like? 10 months that we have left of the year?
KS: Or we might just do a few tours, we’ll have to see
RR: -laughs- either way it’ll be good!
KS: Yeah, exactly! But nah, we’ve got a few shows coming up and cool things happening so, yeah, hopefully people back it
RR: Yeah! And are you guys intending on heading to any of the festivals this year like Splendour or Groovin’?
MA: I’ll probably go as a punter! I dunno, I wanna go to the Groovin that just got announced in Perth or Bunbury? We’re goin’ on like a mini-tour with Good Dogs in between this tour and the Verge Collection tour, we’re doing like The Zoo in Brisbane, Shark Bar on the Goldie, and Woollongong on Sunday
KS: They’re real good mates of ours, just always get up to mischief with ‘em so it’s gonna be
MA: I wonder if they’re drinking emu’s at the moment
KS: They’re probably drinking emu’s right now
RR: Alright well, that was pretty much all the questions I had for you guys today so I just, yeah, wishing you guys the best of luck for the upcoming shows and ah
MA: Thank you very much
RR: -laughs- best of luck with your candidacy for President
MA: Yeah well you know, we’re not, it’s not a candidacy, it’s gonna sorta be like an invasion but not an invasion, we’re just gonna take over the world
RR: You’re just gonna do it, go in there, storm the White House
KS: Give it a go, give it a red-hot go
MA: Yeah storm the gates! It’s like that song in Tenacious D – Pick of Destiny, where it’s like, “the mission is clear, I’m goin’ over there, I’m goin’ to do the mission!” and then the chorus is like, “STORM THE GATES! STORM THE GATES!”
MA: Heaps sick song, and heaps good movie!
RR: Maybe you could do a cover of that one?
KS: Aw, I’d actually back that pretty hard
MA: -laughs- yeah! STORM THE GATES!!
RR: -laughs- well thanks so much for the chat guys and best of luck with the rest of the year
KS: No worries, thank you
MA: Cheers as! Bloody lovely to talk to ya
RR: Oh, lovely to talk to you too, have a good afternoon!
KS: See ya later!
