2018 has been one hell of a year for Aussie music and Newcastle rockers, The Gooch Palms, have been lapping up every moment of it. After spending most of the year performing shows all around Australia, the twosome have recently dropped their hit single ‘Summertime’ along with a whacky and funny film clip that showcases what the band is really all about, having a laugh and making sick music.
Tayla Sudall and Gooch Palms’, Leroy Macqueen had a chat about the bands last show for the year at Best Night Ever as well as their plans to drop a new album early next year.
Catch the full interview below.
Rabbit Radio: Hey Leroy!
Leroy Macqueen: How ya doing?
RR: Hey I’m good, how are you?
LM: Yeah good!
RR: How have you been surviving in this hot weather lately?
LM: Aw we’ve got aircon
RR: You’ve got aircon?
RR: Oh… well there you go –laughs- I’ve been like, going to work so happy to get in the aircon there
LM: Aw big, yeah
RR: So, we were gonna have a chat today about a couple of things, you guys are gearing up to perform at Best Night Ever, are you guys pumped for that?
LM: Yeah for sure! It’s gonna be a ripper! My liver is pumped for it too
LM: My livers pumped for it as well
RR: Well that’s good –laughs- that’s handy, wise, wise. And it’s a sick line up, are there any bands on there that you guys are keen to see perform?
LM: All of them –laughs- it’s pretty good, yeah
RR: Have you worked alongside any of them before?
LM: I think all of ‘em except for CRUM
RR: Oh okay sweet, yeah cool. Well, do you ever still get like, nervous or anything being around any of the other bands or do you just consider them all like your mates now?
LM: I definitely don’t get nervous around Dune Rats because we played like 50 shows with them last year so hmm, it’s actually less nerve racking when you’re there with all your mates, it’s more nerve racking when you kind of um, playing a festival or something with people you don’t know, it can be a bit… especially when there’s bands there that are like… clearly wankers –laughs-
RR: -laughs- fully!
LM: They’re never Australian bands, they’re always overseas bands that are like that but um, because Australian bands are all cool –laughs-
RR: -laughs- nice save! So will you be spending much time on the Goldie after the show?
LM: Ahh, no, I think it’s like in an in-and-out
RR: Oh okay, well have you got anything on after Best Night Ever?
LM: Nah we’re going into… I think we’re going into hibernation
RR: Yeah, yep, you guys pretty much deserve it I would say because you’ve had a massive year just like playing gigs everywhere, supporting bands and you recently dropped Summertime, your new single, so have you guys had much time to wind down otherwise?
LM: I’m currently on holidays right now
RR: Oh good!
LM: For the first time in about four years
LM: Yeah, yeah, I’ve grown a beard and everything, I’ve like, really kicked it
RR: -laughs- you’re going large
LM: Yeah we had a really good holiday we just sort of um, went and visited a bunch of people that play in other bands as well along the way and it was sick to sort of just hang out, not on a music kinda level and just go swimming and go pat a kangaroo and yeah, yeah we went to a koala sanctuary for BC’s (BC Michaels) birthday and that was his birthday present from Gooch Palms was tickets to the koala sanctuary
RR: That’s so lovely of you guys
LM: Yeah ‘cause we missed it, his birthday was yesterday but we were there on Monday in Brisbane, so yeah we had a ripper of day, touching koalas and me and BC were talking to a cockatoo for a bit, that was pretty cool
LM: I feel like the cockatoo was definitely on our level as well
RR: Yeah nice
LM: Yeah, he was a bit of a larrikin, bit of a larrikin
RR: -laughs- could it talk back at all?
RR: Aw mad
LM: Yeah yeah, it was pretty funny
RR: That’s good you would’ve got a good gauge of it’s personality
LM: Yeah well we were kinda saying that we should do things like that more often on tour and not waste our days being hungover and stuff
RR: Yeah! It would be good, but then also partying is fun as well, you’ll have to find a balance –laughs-
LM: Yeah I’m just perpetually hungover
RR: That’s not good
LM: No –laughs-
RR: So what went into recording Summertime, how do you guys approach making new music?
LM: Summertime I actually forgot about, that it was even a song that I wrote, I forget what it was called, it had a title, but when we were recording um… this album was done way different because like, we didn’t have time to sort of, take time off to write or whatever so it was pretty much just a combination of stuff that had been written on the computer and then we kind of just like chopped a bunch of stuff up, and then got Kat to play drums over a lot of stuff, and then a lot of the stuff that was just written on the road is actually gonna be on the album
RR: Yeah cool
LM: ‘Cause ah, it kind of just fit the vibe but yeah this record was literally written everywhere so ah, all over
RR: That’s good you’d be inspired from all different places and things, it’s cool
LM: Yeah, yeah it was good and then sort of brought in some new elements like we got a drum machine, an old 80’s 808 Drum Machine that um, I was listening to a lot of old hip hop at the time and I was like, and one came on sale, and I was like ‘yep, I gotta buy that’ and ah, kind of wrote like Martha and Summertime because of that drum machine. So it was cool!
RR: That is cool! What’s an 80’s drum machine? –laughs-
LM: It’s a like, the Roland 808 Drum Machine which is probably, it’d be in the top five most famous drum machines I reckon
RR: Mmkay, alright, I need to get a bit more educated then clearly –laughs-
LM: Yeah and then you’ve got the 909 and 303, the 707 –laughs- I’m just joking
LM: I could go on for hours, I’m a bit of tech nerd when it comes to that stuff and spend a lot of money, like I just bought two new guitars today, no real reason I’ve just gotta have stuff, ‘cause like one of my favourite bands is Anthrax and so I bought these two Jackson Guitars, hella metal guitars, and I’m thinking I’m gonna probably play ‘em in Gooch Palms
RR: Yeah sick, will you bring ‘em to the Best Night Ever?
LM: Ahh, nah
RR: Aw what?
LM: Nah I don’t think they’ll be ready by then
RR: Oh okay –laughs- but what about the filmclip for Summertime because you guys showcase some pretty sweet moves, and I’m just wondering what that film clips all about –laughs-
LM: Oh we just like to make people smile
RR: Oh okay good –laughs-
LM: So ah, yeah, so we’re kind of like, well how can you do that when you’re not in front of people like actually in real life? So we just thought lets do a music video that you know, ‘cause there’s heaps of shit things in the world always, so we kind of had that feeling that if we could just for three minutes make you forget about all the crap and have a giggle then job done –laughs-
RR: -laughs- well yes job done indeed, it made me laugh
LM: Yeah! We’re kind of like, I dunno, we’re like, we could be a children’s band if I wasn’t a nudist, that’s kind of the vibe of The Gooch Palms
RR: -laughs- So what can we expect from you guys next year? Are there more plans for touring or
LM: New album!
RR: New album! Sick!
LM: Yeah new album before July
RR: Oh awesome
LM: Yeah it’s done, it’s finished, mastered, it’s completely done, the artworks done, got a name, it’s ready to go!
LM: Thirteen songs, yeah
RR: How come we have to wait until July?
LM: I don’t know that’s out of my hands
RR: Just the suspense of it all!
LM: Ask Ratbag Records, the big dogs!
RR: Alright, I’ll get onto them
LM: -laughs- I actually know when it’s coming out but I don’t know if I’m allowed to disclose, you know that sort of like… I always seem to put my foot in it, ‘cause I always just tell everyone everything, I’m not very secretive so I’ll just stop talking about it otherwise you’ll get the exclusive scoop
RR: Can’t be doing that! –laughs- do you guys have any plans for New Years?
LM: Hopefully not! It’s not my favourite time of the year, I feel like every day is New Years day when you’re in a band that plays a lot so
LM: Aw maybe… we’re gonna be in Melbourne and ah, maybe just catch up with some friends ah, drink 100 beers and pass out
RR: Yeah sick that sounds good
LM: Before 4.00pm probably if I know me
RR: -laughs- I think that’s the best way to do it, if you amp up New Years too much it always ends up being crap
LM: Yeah unless you’re playing but this year we’re yeah, we’re not doing anything this year so yep
RR: Yeah keep it casual, that’ll be good!
LM: Yep, yeah, it’ll be good! Plus Best Night Ever will be our last night ever for 2018 playing, so yeah it’ll be good, it’s a good one to kind of, that’ll be like New Years Eve for us
RR: Yep and it’s a sick way to ring out the year so sweet!
LM: Yeah it’ll be sick
RR: Yeah alright, well ah best of luck with Best Night Ever and massive congratulations on the release of Summertime
LM: Thank you!
RR: And I’m looking forward to the album in July… hopefully sooner
LM: Yeah I reckon it’ll be sooner
RR: Fingers crossed!
LM: Somewhere between January and July I reckon
RR: Alright –laughs- I’ll hold you to it!
LM: -laughs- alright thank you, thanks for having me!
RR: No worries, thank you! See you later
LM: No wakkas, see ya!
