New music for your ears including Sunbeam Sound Machine, The Harpoons, Asdasfr Bawd, Death Bells, Clairy Browne, GOAT & more!
GOAT – IT’S TIME FOR FUN (BILLIONS AUSTRALIA)
GOAT are a mysterious cult-like Swedish alternative and experimental fusion music group that originates from north of the Arctic Circle in Korpilombolo, Norrbotten County and now reside in Gothenberg. Little is known about the individuals in the group except that they all know that GOAT is mainly a symbol of sacrifice and each understand the importance of sacrificing the individual for the collective good if you are to become one with the rest of humanity and universe.
Their break-out debut long player, “World Music” which blended Nigerian afrobeat, German krautrock, Anatolian funk, and a host of other global micro-niches into a hallucinatory cultish celebration of rock’s diverse manifestations made many 2012 best album lists. With the 2014 follow up, “Commune” they delivered a heavy dose of acidic grooves, hypnotic incantations, and serpentine guitar lines to explore new territories and hit the year’s best-of lists again.
CLAIRY BROWNE – VANITY FAIR (VANGUARD)
‘Vanity Fair’ was co-written and produced by Clairy with Rob Kleiner (The Weekend, Sia) and MNDR Warner (Mark Ronson, Q-Tip, Charlie XCX) and Gabriel Strangio (The Bangin’ Rackettes, Kira Puru) and is the first taste of an LP due out later this year.
ASDASFR BAWD – ALSP (SOLITAIRE)
‘Alsp’ is a demonstration of a masterful understanding of rhythm. The vocal sampling pushes and pulls the timing of the entire song, while simultaneously elating a beautiful melody, behind simple chords. Of the first single, Asdasfr Bawd says, “Alsp was a chance to create one of those hyped up roller coaster rides with unstoppable momentum. It takes from some jungle and footwork influence and rolls them into one.”
“Underpass EP” sees Asdasfr Bawd at his most adventurous and most fully-formed yet. Melding skill-sets highlighted in both disciplines, Asdasfr Bawd takes his understanding of beautifully structured classical music, with superbly intellectual harmony and combines it with the emotional rhythms unique to early garage and footwork. With Simon Lam (I'lls, Klo) on mastering duties, the result is mature EP that is emotional and hard hitting.
DEATH BELLS – COME ON, FEEL THE COMEDOWN (INDEPENDENT)
Sydney via Brisbane five-piece dreamboats Death Bells have only released one single but there is little doubt that they are on their way to greatness. Cutting their musical teeth as past members of Sundial, Low Season, Hopelestown, Time Crisis and Upperground, Death Bells are old souls despite having just said goodbye to their teenage years. Recently getting together, these gents blend the song writing ethos of Northern England in the early 1990s with the hazy suburbs of Sydney’s inner city, all executed with modern production and attention to detail.
THE HARPOONS – READY FOR YOUR LOVE (INDEPENDENT)
The Harpoons are a four-piece group from Melbourne, Australia whose catalog of sweet tracks dances along the borders between sultry R&B, pop, and fuzzy electronic. Off stage, The Harpoons are brothers Henry and Jack Mardin, Bec Rigby, and Martin King.
The Harpoons are rolling out their latest track on The FADER today. It's called ‘Ready For Your Love’ and it features Bec Rigby's frank vocals singing about waiting, finding, and bracing yourself for love. An array of electronic flourishes—including a MIDI-sourced marimba line—and percussion tie this yearning, joyful cut together.
TEMPURA NIGHTS – STUDVILLE (INDEPENDENT)
Fear not, the jangly garage pop of Tempura Nights has returned and their latest offering is a one-minute-thirty, utter banger, titled 'Studville'.
Their latest single, 'Studville' continues to mix influences from snotty punk to ethereal pop and defiantly challenge song structures; they cut all the fat on ‘Studville’, pushing out only the necessary verses and instrumentals; it only clocks in at one minute thirty, but they sure as hell make sure each second counts.
SUNBEAM SOUND MACHINE – GETTING YOUNG (DOT DASH / REMOTE CONTROL)
After releasing his debut LP Wonderer to widespread critical acclaim in November 2014 Nick Sowersby aka Sunbeam Sound Machine is excited to share some new music with the world. 'Getting Young' is the first single to by lifted from a fourthcoming limited edition 7" vinyl release.
Although Sunbeam Sound Machine was originally conceived as a solo studio project Nick has drawn together a strong touring band capable of recreating the recordings live and has toured Australia extensively.
CAR SEAT HEADREST – SOMETHING SOON (MATADOR / REMOTE CONTROL)
This prolific artist (née Will Toledo) comes to Matador having already crafted an 11-album catalog of staggering depth, all self-released on Bandcamp, which has gained him an obsessive following and over 25,000 downloads – all without the muscle of a manager, label, agent, or publicist – until now.
Car Seat Headrest's conceptual ambition and stunning songwriting has been apparent since its early days of laptop recording, the scale of Toledo’s vision going far beyond the constricting “lo-fi” term. Now on his Matador Records debut, “Teens of Style”, we witness Toledo presenting his intricate ideas with more clarity and refinement than ever, delivering an enthralling collection of songs destined for wide acclaim.
