Happy Tuesday, Happy NEW RELEASES for the week. This week was a cracker and every tune we've collected is bloody great so get amongst it, grab a cup of tea, a beer, your best mate and delve into this list of 8. Featuring The Laurels, The Peep Tempel, DATURA4 and loads more....
THE LAURELS - 'SONICOLOGY' (Rice Is Nice)
The Laurels are set to release Sonicology on October 14 and have just released their brand new single and clip for the title track, as well as announcing the rad supports joining them on their national tour! 'Sonicology' follows second single 'Hit and Miss' which was premiered via Oyster Magazine where it was described as 'a definite hit'. A dark video clip was created and premiered via Noisey stating "The Disturbing New Video From The Laurels Is Like a Missing Scene From ‘Funny Games’".
Sonicology comes four years after The Laurels released their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Plains’ and many wondered if they’d ever hear from the band again.
GEORGE MAPLE - 'LOVER' (Future Classic)
‘Lover’ sees multi-talent George Maple take center stage and the results are enrapturing, a somnambulant vocal gliding across a sensuous, smooth production which was headed up by Maple herself. The video is the perfect companion piece, directed by fashion photographer Darren McDonald and shot in an equestrian centre in Sydney. It entirely captures the essence of the song, with Maple and Jordan Barrett in the throes of an all consuming, forbidden love.
Maple’s acclaimed debut EP, Vacant Space, arrived via esteemed Australian pop label Future Classic (Flume, Nick Murphy (Chet Faker)) in 2014, followed up with last year’s single ‘Where You End And I Begin’. Behind the scenes, Maple assists and writes for other artists and her writing and production credits include Hayden James, Snakehips, Flume and Tkay Maidza, totalling over 70 million Soundcloud plays across the board. As a live performer Maple has had world-wide acclaim and sold out shows in London, L.A and New York, this summer she'll return to Australia for Origin Festival, Perth and the 2017 edition of FOMO Festival.
WARPAINT - 'NEW SONG' JONO JAGWAR MA REMIX (Remote Control Records)
Warpaint have released a remix of 'New Song' by Jono of Jagwar Ma. Further 'New Song' remixes are forthcoming, with Beastie Boys’ Mike D’s version set for release October 14 and a rework by Soulwaxto follow.
'New Song' comes from the band's critically acclaimed third album Heads Up which is out now via Rough Trade Records / Remote Control.
Heads Up was recorded after the band spent 2015 apart working on solo projects and their own endeavors. Reuniting in January of this year, the band invited producer Jacob Bercovici—with whom they had worked on their debut EP Exquisite Corpse—into their House on the Hill studio in Downtown Los Angeles to begin work on the new LP.
DATURA4 - 'HAIRY MOUNTAIN' (Alive Naturalsound Records)
DATURA4 are proud to announce the release of album number two, Hairy Mountain, available in store and online from October 28 through the Alive NaturalSound Records label.
Hairy Mountain builds on DATURA4’s 'guitars to infinity' approach and classic song-writing skills and features ten solid tracks which celebrate an unbridled joy for rock'n'roll with a nod to the spiritual presence of their hairy Oz rock forefathers.
Opening track ‘Fool's Gold Rush' kicks things off on a haze of heavy fuzz and dreamy vocal harmonies, and then leads straight into the menacing 'Trolls' which sets the album on a course of hard rock riffage and psych-boogie blues. Songwriters Mariani andHitchcock make comment on their fear of the world turning to shit and other sobering themes, alongside the utopian optimism of the title track - with its monolithic groove and lysergic tale of perfect surf breaks and peace-pipe smoking chiefs.
THE PEEP TEMPEL - 'TOTALITY' (Wing Sing)
When you're included in a list of artists like Total Control, Blank Realm, Chet Faker, AC/DC, Sia, Courtney Barnett and others for some of the best songs in your country, my guess is you probably delivered. But that's the deal with the Peep Tempel, who was not only nominated for the APRA Awards' best song of the year in 2014, but also the (deep breath now) Australian Independent Record Labels Association 2015 Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards' best hard rock or punk group. Big shoes to fill, but that's some real competition there.
Since the band didn't take home those awards, maybe the fact that they didn't will make them more hungry? Or maybe the new song "Totality" from their forthcoming LP Joy might be another step closer to the winners' circle. Or maybe they're just trying to make a sick full LP for their label, Wing Sing, and have it ready by October 14.
TIGERTOWN - 'PAPERNOTE' (Inertia)
Sydney alt pop foursome Tigertown will make you feel the kind of love you’d travel the world for as they today reveal the title track from their forthcoming EP. Premiered via Pop Justice, “Papernote” is a love confession and a shimmering rally cry. With new music in the world, Tigertown are bringing their infectious pop for a national tour this December with support from brooding musician Amy Shark.
Recorded across four continents the pop supanova “Papernote” was built around a two-bar loop from Zimbabwe guitar legend Oliver Mtukudzi, with production from Iceland’s Siggi and additional touches from LA hit makers Captain Cuts. It’s as urgent as a valentine in neon lights, radiating affection that no listener can resist.
OKBADLANDS - 'DUST & GOLD' (Independent)
With previous track ‘Good Logic’ being described as “mirrorlike, like a still lake in the setting sun, golden and calm” (The Autumn Roses), and “Drifting, beautiful, delicate” (Nat Tencic, Triple J Unearthed),OKBADLANDS have once again weaved soulful vocal harmonies with delicate and unhurried beats, leaving you dazzled and wanting more.
New single “Dust & Gold” is a take on the phrase ‘I’m only human’ - inspired by our culture’s push for perfection, and the pressure it causes. While the track dwells on the effects of societal pressures, the chorus is about choosing to move on from patterns that keep us trapped.
“Dust & Gold” is the first single of OKBADLANDS’ upcoming EP (to be released next year), also produced byMax Byrne (Golden Vessel).
BERNARD FANNING - 'RECKLESS' (Dew Process)
‘Reckless’ is the second official single from Bernard Fanning’s stunning, ARIA Nominated third solo release, ‘Civil Dusk’.
Opening with delicate acoustic guitar and building with layers of harmonies, “Reckless looks at the idea of being hunted by your own thoughts” says Bernard. “The act of willfully ignoring failures and wrongs of your own doing, and what the compounding consequences of that can be.”
Bernard collaborated with director Natalie van den Dungen once again, (the two previously teamed up to make the clip for first single Wasting Time) and producer Nicole Coventry, down at the beach on a gorgeous spring night to make the clip for ‘Reckless’.
Tickets to Bernard’s national album tour that kicks off October 18th, have flown out the door, shows at the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Sydney, Adelaide, Cairns, Brisbane and Byron Bay all SOLD OUT and the rest about to follow suit.
Bernard and the band took a break from the studio last week, heading to Melbourne, into the eye of the footy Grand Final storm, to play on the AFL Footy Show.
