Jingly jammers! Ringing in our very own Xmas Party this Sunday come eight new and festive numbers guaranteed to kick start the festive cheer. Contributing to our roster of carollers this holiday season are Polish Club, The Growlers, Best Coast, Girl Ray, Dude York, Phoebe Bridgers, Rostam and The Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr.
GIRL RAY – (I WISH I WERE GIVING YOU A GIFT) THIS CHRISTMAS” (MOSHI MOSHI RECORDS)
Girl Ray are one of those bands who flip pop goof into something brilliant. 2017’s Earl Grey can attest to this as can ‘I Wish I Were Giving You A Gift) This Christmas’. This latest track plays a little like Slade and for this reason, we hope they are getting that one thing on their lists.
DUDE YORK – BREAK UP HOLIDAY (HARDLY ART/INERTIA MUSIC)
Lo-fi outfit Dude York has gone one better and cut a full-length Xmas album. Turns out that when it comes to the silly season this hard-rocking Seattle outfit have a lot to say. Emotional opener ‘Break Up Holiday’ reminds the listener that it’s not always prezzies and candy canes. For many, there’s an element of heartbreak which accompanies the holiday cheer.
PHOEBE BRIDGERS – HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS (DEAD OCEANS)
Christmas is all about banging out those staples. Here LA’s Phoebe Bridgers reaches into the songbook to pull a real goldy. With atmospheric production wrapping around hazed out vocals, she takes the song’s typical arrangement and twists it into something dark and hauntingly introspective.
POLISH CLUB – ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU (UNIVERSAL)
Sydneysiders Polish Club aren’t letting these internationals hog all the fun. Joining them in covering Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ are a slew of familiar Aussie faces. Rock solid.
THE GROWLERS – LONELY THIS CHRISTMAS (CULT RECORDS)
Et tu, Growlers? You betcha! These guys absolutely tore it up on their Australian tour last month and now they’ve decided to serenade fans one more time. Performed live in 2016, the clip captures frontman Brooks Neislon pouring on the holiday swagger.
BEST COAST – LITTLE SAINT NICK (AMAZON)
While the phenomena is still not entirely understood, holiday-themed albums are something which sell. For this reason, Amazon Music has decided to continue the time-honoured tradition of rolling out a few dollars to convince their favourite artists to bring on that festive cheer. Jumping along for the ride accomplished indie duo Best Coast have covered The Beach Boys’ ‘Little Saint Nick’. Most likely the only time a listener will hear Bethany Cosentino singing them a merry Christmas.
ALBERT HAMMOND JR. – THE LITTLE BOY SANTA CLAUS FORGOT (AMAZON)
It looks like The Strokes’ Albert Hammond has jumped on Amazon’s Indie For The Holidays bandwagon as well. Opting for a less-than-conventional route ‘The Little Boy Santa Claus Forgot’ melds Vera Lynn and Nat King Cole’s 1953 hit with George Harrison’s ‘My Sweet Lord’. What’s in that Christmases stocking? A new Strokes album perhaps?
ROSTAM– FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK (SPOTIFY)
Spotify aren’t sitting idle while Amazon steals all the cheer. In fact, they’ve commissioned a few Christmas covers of their very own. Under the Spotty banner DMX has dropped a banging cover of ‘Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer’ but as far as we’re concerned Vampire Weekend alum Rostam takes the pudding. Here he’s covered The Pouges’ gutter-spitting classic ‘Fairytale of New York’.
